Sowore Storms Court With Supporters As DSS Arrest Warrant Drama Deepens

ABUJA — Activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, on Monday stormed the Federal High Court in Abuja alongside scores of supporters following the issuance of a bench warrant for his arrest by the court.

Sowore, who is also the publisher of Sahara Reporters, arrived at the court premises amid chants and solidarity demonstrations by supporters carrying placards in his favour.

His appearance came days after Justice Mohammed Umar revoked the bail earlier granted to him and ordered security agencies to arrest and produce him before the court over his failure to appear for trial.

The court had on June 16 granted an oral application by counsel to the Department of State Services (DSS), Akinkolu Kehinde (SAN), seeking the revocation of Sowore’s bail.

Following the application, Justice Umar issued a bench warrant directing security agencies to arrest the activist and ensure his appearance before the court.

The DSS is prosecuting Sowore over allegations that he made false and defamatory statements against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in posts published on his X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook accounts.

According to the prosecution, Sowore allegedly described President Tinubu as “a criminal” in the social media posts, an allegation the DSS insists contravenes relevant laws.

The case has continued to generate widespread public interest, with supporters of the activist gathering at the court complex ahead of the proceedings.

As of the time of filing this report, court proceedings had yet to commence, while security operatives maintained a strong presence around the court premises.

The latest development marks another chapter in the legal battle between Sowore and the DSS, with political observers closely watching the outcome of the case.
