TCN Restores Benin–Egbin Line After Lagos Power Disruption

Abuja, Nigeria — June 25, 2026 — The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has restored the Benin–Egbin 330kV transmission line following a power disruption that affected Lagos and surrounding areas after a grid instability on Thursday morning.

TCN said the incident occurred at about 8:19 a.m. when voltage instability spread across the Lagos corridor, leading to the loss of some generating stations, transmission line outages, and interruption of electricity supply.

In a statement signed by its General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah, the company confirmed that immediate steps were taken to stabilise the national grid.

“The National Control Centre swiftly instructed several generators to reduce output in order to arrest the frequency rise, stabilise the system, and prevent further disruption,” TCN stated.

The Minister of Power, Chief Joseph Tegbe, also convened an emergency meeting with the leadership of TCN and the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) to coordinate restoration efforts.

TCN disclosed that the Benin–Egbin 330kV line, one of the affected transmission lines, has been fully restored and is currently transmitting bulk electricity.

However, work is ongoing to fix faults on the Benin–Omotoso 330kV transmission line, with engineers from the Benin and Omotoso subregions deployed to ensure full restoration of power supply to the Lagos complex.

“We deeply regret the inconvenience and discomfort this incident has caused residents, businesses, and electricity customers,” the statement added.

The company assured consumers that efforts are underway to strengthen the national grid and minimise future occurrences of such disruptions.
