President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), marking a generational shift in the leadership of Nigeria’s central admissions body.
Aina will succeed Professor Is-haq Oloyede, whose two-term tenure is set to expire on July 31, 2026, bringing to a close a widely noted period of institutional reforms within the examination body.
The newly appointed registrar, who turns 40 in July, is regarded as one of Nigeria’s youngest professors in Computer Engineering and is set to become the youngest person to head JAMB.
A distinguished academic at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Aina brings over 15 years of experience spanning digital systems, examination management, and public-sector reform. His academic credentials include a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent, as well as a Master’s and PhD in Internet Computing, Network Security, and Digital Signal Processing from Loughborough University, United Kingdom.
He also attended the Senior Management Programme at Lagos Business School, further strengthening his leadership and administrative capacity.
Aina’s professional journey is closely tied to Nigeria’s examination system, having begun his career with JAMB during his National Youth Service. He has since worked extensively with key examination bodies such as the National Examinations Council (NECO) and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB), offering expertise in ICT systems, examination integrity, and digital transformation.
His appointment is seen as a strategic move aimed at consolidating and advancing ongoing reforms in JAMB, particularly in the areas of technology-driven admissions processes, transparency, and efficiency.
A member of several professional organisations, including the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), Aina is expected to leverage his multidisciplinary background to reposition the Board.
In a statement issued by the State House, President Tinubu expressed confidence in Aina’s ability to build on the achievements of his predecessor and further strengthen JAMB’s role in ensuring credible and efficient admissions into tertiary institutions across Nigeria.
Education stakeholders say the appointment signals a renewed focus on digital innovation and institutional strengthening within Nigeria’s education sector.
