Abuja, June 12, 2026 — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu says Nigeria’s security operations have recorded significant progress, including the neutralisation of over 13,000 terrorists in the past year and a major reduction in terror-related deaths.
In his Democracy Day address, the President said the Federal Government had declared a security emergency and approved the recruitment of more than 50,000 new police officers, alongside thousands of military recruits, to strengthen national security.
Tinubu also disclosed that the 2026 national budget includes ₦5.41 trillion allocated to defence and security, describing it as the largest in the country’s history.
He stated that Nigerian forces, working with international partners, have carried out precision operations, including the degradation of an ISWAP command centre in Arege, Borno State.
The President added that over 124,000 fighters and their dependents have surrendered since 2023 under the Operation Safe Corridor programme.
While highlighting progress, Tinubu warned criminal elements across the country to surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian State, stressing that ongoing surrender windows would not remain open indefinitely.
He urged national unity in addressing insecurity, saying the country must stand together against those threatening peace and stability.
