President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to reducing road traffic deaths and injuries, calling for stronger global cooperation to achieve the United Nations target of halving road crash fatalities by 2030. Represented by the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, at the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Improving Global Road Safety in New York, the President said the Federal Government remains committed to strengthening road safety through strategic reforms, technology-driven enforcement, improved emergency response and sustained public awareness campaigns in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Speaking at the meeting, themed “Scaling Up and Accelerating Implementation of Commitments to Halving Road Traffic Deaths and Injuries by 2030,” Mohammed highlighted Nigeria’s partnership with the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) through the launch of the Nigeria Road Assessment Programme (NigeriaRAP) and the country’s role as host of the Secretariat of the African Association of Road Safety Lead Agencies (AARSLA). He also said Nigeria is promoting cleaner transportation through the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Electric Vehicles while developing safety standards for emerging transport technologies. The FRSC boss urged the international community to strengthen technical cooperation, technology transfer and capacity building, stressing that road safety remains a top priority for the Tinubu administration.
