Lokoja — Troops of the Nigerian Army have foiled an attempted abduction of school children in Iluke Community, Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State, preventing what could have been a large-scale kidnapping.
The development was disclosed in a press statement signed by Lieutenant Hassan Abdullahi, Acting Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 12 Brigade Nigerian Army.
According to the statement, the terrorists, who were disguised in military uniforms, had assembled pupils of Iluke Primary School with plans to abduct them before troops intervened.
The Army said the operation followed credible intelligence provided by vigilant community members, prompting troops of 12 Brigade under 2 Division to swiftly mobilise and advance to the area.
“On arrival, troops engaged the terrorists, forcing them to abandon their mission and flee,” the statement said, adding that one terrorist was neutralised while several others escaped with gunshot wounds.
However, the Army confirmed that the attackers killed a teacher and a resident before troops arrived, describing the act as “criminal and inhumane.”
Military authorities noted that the rapid response of troops saved many lives and demonstrated the commitment and professionalism of personnel in protecting vulnerable communities.
Troops have since launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects, while security agencies in neighbouring Kwara and Niger states have been alerted to block possible escape routes.
The Army also urged members of the public to continue providing timely and credible information to support ongoing operations against criminal elements.
