The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) has invited the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barr. Nyesom Wike, to deliver its 36th Combined Convocation Lecture, citing his contributions to governance, infrastructure development and public administration.
Wike is scheduled to speak on the theme, “Leadership and Infrastructure Development in Nigeria: Lessons for Future Leaders,” at the lecture slated for Saturday, June 6, 2026, at the university’s New Convocation Arena in Choba, Rivers State.
The institution, in a letter signed by its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari A. Georgewill, said the convocation lecture would provide an opportunity for graduating students and the wider academic community to engage with issues central to leadership, national development and the future of society.
Georgewill described the FCT Minister’s record in public service and infrastructure delivery as a demonstration of visionary leadership and statesmanship.
According to the university, the lecture, one of the highlights of the convocation ceremony, offers a platform for distinguished personalities to share perspectives on governance, development and nation-building with students preparing to enter the next phase of their lives.
The Vice-Chancellor noted that Wike’s presence at the event would not only honour his alma mater but also reinforce the relationship between scholarship, leadership and national progress.
“We believe that your presence and voice at this significant academic milestone will not only honour your alma mater but also reinforce the vital connection between leadership, scholarship and national progress,” the university stated.
The institution added that the lecture would serve as a source of inspiration and guidance for graduating students as they navigate future opportunities and challenges.
Wike accepted the invitation through a letter signed by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Chidi Amadi.
The acceptance letter explained that the minister chose the topic because of his belief that effective leadership must be measured by tangible outcomes, particularly through the provision of critical infrastructure, social services and other public amenities that improve citizens’ welfare.
The lecture is expected to attract members of the academic community, policymakers, government officials, alumni and students from across the country.
