NERC declares zero tolerance for non-compliance, intensifies enforcement across power sector

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on regulatory breaches, warning licensees in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) to strictly adhere to compliance standards or face sanctions.

The Commission made this known during its ongoing Compliance Peer Review Meeting in Abuja, chaired by Commissioner for Legal, Licensing and Compliance, Dafe Akpeneye.

The meeting, which brought together regulatory and compliance officers across the electricity value chain, focused on strengthening enforcement mechanisms and improving operational standards within the sector.

Key discussions at the session included performance reviews and peer benchmarking among compliance officers, aimed at driving accountability and continuous improvement across power sector operators.

NERC also explored the integration of Artificial Intelligence into compliance and regulatory processes, signalling a shift towards more technology-driven oversight.

Other critical issues reviewed included compliance scorecards of licensees, progress on metering nationwide, adherence to market and reporting obligations, and the status of health and safety submissions across the industry.

Participants at the meeting included representatives from generation companies, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), distribution companies, the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc (NBET), and other stakeholders.

The Commission reiterated its commitment to maintaining strict regulatory discipline, noting that compliance remains essential to improving service delivery and ensuring stability in Nigeria’s electricity sector.
