Abuja, Nigeria — The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a cleaner and more sustainable environment through stricter regulation of the petroleum sector.
In an official statement marking the 2026 World Environment Day, the Authority emphasized its ongoing efforts to enforce environmental standards, reduce pollution, and advance cleaner energy solutions across the country.
“We reaffirm our commitment to a cleaner and more sustainable environment,” the NMDPRA stated, noting that effective oversight of midstream and downstream petroleum operations remains central to achieving this goal.
The regulator highlighted its strategic push to expand the adoption of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as a cleaner alternative fuel, alongside broader initiatives to promote low-emission energy sources and improve environmental compliance among operators.
According to the Authority, these measures are already contributing to reduced emissions and improved air quality in various parts of Nigeria.
The NMDPRA further stressed the importance of collaboration with industry stakeholders and the public in driving environmental sustainability, adding that collective action is critical to building a greener future.
Experts say the growing emphasis on cleaner fuels such as CNG aligns with Nigeria’s broader energy transition goals and could help mitigate the environmental impact of fossil fuel consumption.
The Authority reiterated its resolve to sustain regulatory reforms and strengthen compliance frameworks to ensure long-term environmental protection while supporting energy security.
