Mahmoud Charges Nigerian Pilgrims on Discipline as 2026 Hajj Flights Begin

The Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, on Saturday charged Nigerian pilgrims embarking on the 2026 Hajj to uphold discipline and exemplary conduct, as the country officially commenced its pilgrimage operations.

Speaking at the inaugural flight and flag-off ceremony held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, Mahmoud stressed that the behaviour of pilgrims would shape Nigeria’s image on the global stage.

She described the take-off of the first batch of pilgrims as both a logistical milestone and a deeply spiritual moment, marking the beginning of a sacred journey for thousands of Nigerians.

“The Hajj is a call to faith, sacrifice, unity, and total submission to the will of Almighty Allah,” she said, urging pilgrims to embody these virtues throughout their stay in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The minister emphasised the need for strict adherence to the laws and customs of Saudi Arabia, noting that discipline, patience, and humility remain essential to a successful pilgrimage.

Her remarks come as Nigerian authorities intensify efforts to ensure a hitch-free exercise amid the large-scale movement of pilgrims.

Mahmoud commended the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, led by its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Ismail Abba Yusuf, alongside the Federal Capital Territory Administration, aviation authorities, and other stakeholders, for what she described as a high level of preparedness.

She expressed confidence that the collaboration among agencies would guarantee the safety, welfare, and comfort of the pilgrims throughout the exercise.

With the inaugural flight signalling the full rollout of the 2026 Hajj operations, officials say coordination and compliance will be critical to maintaining Nigeria’s record in managing one of the world’s largest annual religious gatherings.
