LAGOS — Veteran Nollywood actor, filmmaker and producer Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66 after battling stage-four cancer.
His death was announced by his daughter, Kira Taiwo, during an emotional Instagram Live session on Sunday, August 23, 2026. Fellow veteran actor Jide Kosoko also confirmed the death, while other members of the Nigerian entertainment industry paid tribute to the Yoruba cinema icon.
Ogogo’s death came only days after his family publicly disclosed that he was battling advanced cancer and appealed for medical assistance. His daughters, Kira and Lima Taiwo, had sought help in identifying medical specialists and facilities capable of providing further treatment.
The family had said the actor was diagnosed with stage-four cancer and that his condition had deteriorated significantly. Reports that hospitals had completely refused to treat him were, however, later described as misleading by a fact-checking report; the family had said doctors were no longer willing or able to continue chemotherapy in his case.
Before his death, colleagues and well-wishers rallied around the veteran actor. Fellow Yoruba actors and filmmakers also gathered for prayers for his recovery as news of his illness spread.
Ogogo’s passing has triggered an outpouring of grief across Nollywood, with colleagues and fans mourning a performer whose career spanned several decades.
Born Taiwo Hassan, Ogogo was from Ilaro in Ogun State and became one of the recognisable faces of Yoruba-language cinema. He built a reputation through acting, filmmaking and his portrayal of memorable characters in Nigerian films.
His career included appearances in numerous Yoruba productions and other Nollywood projects, establishing him as one of the enduring figures of the Nigerian film industry.
The actor had also previously spoken about surviving a prolonged health challenge involving a stomach ulcer before his latest illness.
Ogogo’s death represents a significant loss to the Yoruba film community, coming after decades of contribution to Nigerian cinema.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family.
