Elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, has reflected on a century of life marked by service, sacrifice, and personal loss, declaring that despite enduring pain, his unwavering faith in God has sustained him.
Speaking during his 100th birthday celebration in Akure, Ondo State, the revered nationalist opened up on the emotional toll of losing his wife and two daughters, describing the experience as deeply painful but spiritually strengthening.
“Life Has Not Been Without Pain”
In a heartfelt address, Fasoranti said reaching the milestone of 100 years was solely by divine grace, noting that his journey through Nigeria’s history has been both remarkable and challenging.
“Life has not been without pain. I have buried my beloved wife and lost two of my daughters. The weight of those losses is heavy, and there are days the sorrow feels fresh,” he said.
Despite the grief, the Afenifere leader said his faith remained unshaken, describing God as his source of strength and comfort through difficult times.
A Life of Service and Integrity
Reflecting on his career as an educator and politician, Fasoranti emphasised the importance of integrity, discipline, and selfless service, values he said defined his life’s work.
As a former teacher and principal, he said his greatest achievement was shaping young people into responsible citizens, stressing that leadership must be rooted in character.
“If those who lead lack integrity, what do we expect from those who follow?” he asked.
In politics, he maintained that leadership should be about sacrifice rather than personal gain, noting that his involvement in Afenifere was guided by principles of justice, unity, and service.
Call for Unity in Afenifere, Nigeria
Fasoranti used the occasion to call for unity within the pan-Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, warning that division could weaken its influence and purpose.
“A house divided against itself cannot stand. Let us forgive one another and speak with one voice. Unity is our strength,” he urged.
He also called on Nigerians to return to core values of discipline, honesty, and love, stressing that national progress depends on collective responsibility and moral leadership.
Prayers for Peace, Good Leadership
At 100, the elder statesman said his prayers remain focused on peace, good governance, and the well-being of his family and the nation.
“I pray for peace in our land, for good leaders, and that when my time comes, I will meet my Creator in peace,” he said.
Fasoranti’s reflections have resonated widely, with many describing his life as a symbol of resilience, principled leadership, and enduring commitment to Nigeria’s unity and development.
