The Enugu State Government, in collaboration with the Nigeria Police, has arrested a woman, Mrs. Ogechi John, over the alleged killing of her nine-year-old stepdaughter in a case that has sparked outrage across the state.
The suspect was apprehended on Monday morning following the death of Miss Ogechi Amanda John at their residence in Nchatancha, Emene area of Enugu metropolis.
Alleged Abuse Leads to Child’s Death
According to residents, the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, with neighbours alleging that the young girl had suffered repeated abuse prior to her death.
Witnesses claimed the child had been subjected to persistent maltreatment, raising concerns about prolonged domestic violence before the fatal incident.
Police authorities have since taken the suspect into custody as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

She reiterated the state government’s zero-tolerance policy on child abuse, stressing that authorities would ensure justice is swiftly served.
“The government will pursue a thorough and expedited investigation. No one has the right to take another life, especially that of a child,” she said.
Call for Justice, Stronger Child Protection
The state government assured residents that the case would be handled with urgency, while also calling for increased vigilance and reporting of child abuse cases within communities.
The incident has renewed calls for stronger enforcement of child protection laws and greater awareness to prevent domestic violence against minors.
