The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and political parties have reaffirmed their commitment to credible, transparent and inclusive elections ahead of the 2027 general polls.
This resolution was reached at the end of a three-day training workshop held in Lagos for Heads of Department in Election and Party Monitoring (EPM), political party leaders and senior officials of the Commission.
The workshop, which ended on May 14, 2026, focused on strengthening compliance with electoral regulations, improving party administration and enhancing transparency in political party financing.
Participants engaged extensively on the Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties as well as the Political Party Finance Reporting and Audit System (PFRAS), aimed at promoting accountability within the electoral process.
Speaking at the closing session on behalf of INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, National Commissioner Dr. Kenneth Ukeagu emphasised the Commission’s commitment to neutrality and fairness.
“We are there for you. We always create a level playing field for everyone. The Commission is not supporting any political party and will continue to act strictly in accordance with the law,” he said.
He urged political parties to comply fully with electoral laws and guidelines, particularly during party primaries, while encouraging stakeholders to adopt lawful means in resolving disputes.
Ukeagu also cautioned election monitoring officials to maintain professionalism and objectivity in carrying out their duties.
“You are not directors of political parties. Yours is to monitor and report in line with the law. Do not interfere in the internal conduct of primaries beyond your statutory responsibility,” he stated.
He further called on participants to replicate the knowledge gained during the workshop across their respective states in preparation for the upcoming electoral cycle.
In his remarks, Chief Technical Adviser to the INEC Chairman, Prof. Dimis Mai-Lafia, expressed satisfaction with the outcome of the workshop, noting that its objectives were achieved through robust discussions and technical engagements.
He stressed the need for continuous dialogue and peaceful resolution of political disagreements among stakeholders.
The workshop also received support from development partners, including the Westminster Foundation for Democracy, Development Alternatives Incorporated, the European Union and The Kukah Centre.
The engagement underscores ongoing efforts by INEC and political stakeholders to strengthen Nigeria’s electoral system and ensure credible elections in 2027.
