NERC Sets 6:00 PM Deadline for 2026 National Essay Competition Submission

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued a final reminder to students across the country, confirming that submissions for the 2026 Annual Essay Competition must be received by 6:00 PM today.

According to the announcement, the competition is open to Senior Secondary School 2 (SS2) students in Nigeria who are interested in contributing ideas on the future of the country’s power sector.

Participants are required to submit an essay on the topic: “The Role of Renewable Energy in Improving Electricity Supply in Nigeria.”

Entries must be sent as an email attachment to electricitychallenge@nerc.gov.ng before the stated deadline of 6:00 PM.

NERC stated that each essay should be approximately 1,000 words and must include the participant’s full name, home address, school address, email address, and phone number clearly stated within the body of the essay.

The commission emphasized that the competition is designed to encourage academic excellence and deepen students’ understanding of Nigeria’s electricity sector, particularly the role of renewable energy in improving power supply and sustainability.

According to the guidelines, submissions that do not meet the word count requirement or fail to include the required personal and academic details may be disqualified from the competition.

The annual essay competition is part of NERC’s broader engagement strategy aimed at promoting awareness among young Nigerians about energy transition, electricity regulation, and sustainable development in the power sector.

Winners of the competition are expected to receive cash prizes, with additional recognition also extended to their teachers and schools in appreciation of academic support and mentorship.

NERC reiterated that the deadline is strictly 6:00 PM, noting that late submissions will not be considered under any circumstances.

The commission encouraged eligible students to take advantage of the opportunity to showcase their ideas on renewable energy and contribute to ongoing national discussions around electricity reform and sustainability.

With hours left before the deadline, NERC urged interested students to complete and submit their entries promptly to avoid disqualification.
