The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed that all 22 registered political parties have submitted their membership registers in compliance with the Electoral Act 2026 ahead of the 2027 general election.
The Commission disclosed this in a statement issued on May 15, 2026, noting that the submissions were completed within the extended deadline granted to political parties.
According to INEC, all parties submitted their registers by May 8, 2026, two days before the revised deadline of May 10, following concerns raised over the initial timeline.
The Commission had earlier adjusted the deadline from April 21 to May 10, 2026, after consultations with political parties, to align with provisions of Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act and accommodate party primary schedules.
INEC explained that the submission of membership registers is a critical requirement, as parties are expected to submit such registers at least 21 days before conducting their primaries.
Political parties are scheduled to hold their primaries between April 23 and May 30, 2026, in preparation for the 2027 elections.
The Commission stated that it will now subject the submitted registers to verification processes in accordance with the law.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring free, fair, credible and inclusive elections, urging stakeholders to continue to comply with electoral guidelines and timelines.
The development marks a key milestone in the electoral timetable as preparations intensify for the 2027 general election.
