Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening relations with Malaysia and exploring new opportunities for cooperation as the Southeast Asian country marks its 69th Independence Anniversary.
The Federal Government said it was looking forward to strengthening bilateral ties through sustained high-level dialogue, enhanced institutional cooperation and mutually beneficial partnerships.
The position was contained in a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Oluwafemi Adeniyi, on Monday, August 31, 2026, to commemorate Malaysia’s 69th Independence Anniversary.
Nigeria congratulated the Malaysian government and people on the anniversary, commending the country’s development journey, which it said had been characterised by resilience, political stability, social cohesion and sustained economic growth.
The Federal Government also praised Malaysia’s commitment to national unity, inclusive development and economic progress, describing these as important factors in the country’s transformation over the decades.
“On this auspicious occasion, Nigeria reaffirms its commitment to further strengthening and broadening its longstanding relations with Malaysia, through sustained high-level dialogue, enhanced institutional cooperation, and mutually beneficial partnerships,” the ministry said.
According to the statement, Nigeria and Malaysia have maintained longstanding cordial relations based on mutual respect, shared interests and constructive engagement.
The two countries have developed cooperation across political, economic, cultural and people-to-people spheres, with Nigeria saying the partnership had continued to produce tangible benefits for their citizens.
Nigeria and Malaysia also share membership of major international organisations, including the United Nations, Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and Non-Aligned Movement.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the two countries had continued to work together within these multilateral platforms to promote international peace, security and sustainable development.
Looking ahead, Nigeria said it was prepared to work with Malaysia to identify and develop new areas of collaboration that could advance the shared objectives of prosperity, peace and development.
The government said it expected continued engagement between both countries to further expand the scope of their bilateral partnership and create new opportunities for their peoples.
