Politics Must Unite, Not Divide — Wike Defends Cross-Party Engagement

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barr. Nyesom Wike, has called for a shift from divisive politics to inclusive leadership, saying governance should transcend party lines.

Speaking during a media chat in Abuja on April 4, 2026, Wike defended his decision to host politicians across party divides, describing it as a reflection of leadership and national unity rather than partisan alignment.

“Leadership is not about exclusion. Even if I belong to a political party, it does not stop me from helping or hosting others,” he said.

He argued that the era of “winner-takes-all” politics must give way to cooperation, especially in addressing developmental challenges.

According to him, political actors must prioritise peace and collective progress, citing improved unity in Rivers State as evidence that inclusive engagement can reduce tensions.

Wike also criticised politicians who blame external forces for their internal challenges, urging them instead to build stronger structures and take responsibility for their parties.

On governance, the minister said his administration in the FCT is focused on both infrastructure and social inclusion, particularly for indigenous communities.

“We are not just building roads; we are making people feel the impact of government and giving them a sense of belonging,” he said.

He reaffirmed his commitment to people-centred governance, stressing that development must go hand-in-hand with fairness, engagement and unity.
