ABUJA – The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has congratulated Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, on his 92nd birthday, describing him as a global icon, Nigeria’s moral compass and an enduring symbol of truth, courage and democracy.
In a statement issued on Monday by its National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the party joined millions of admirers around the world in celebrating the literary giant for his immense contributions to nation-building and humanity.
The SDP praised Soyinka for remaining a fearless voice of conscience and a champion of justice, saying his courage and integrity have inspired generations of Nigerians.
The party described Africa’s first Nobel Prize in Literature winner as “a reliable moral compass” whose unwavering commitment to truth has continued to provide hope and direction for the nation.
“Professor Wole Soyinka has consistently been a beacon of excellence, a source of hope and a guiding light whose intellect, integrity and sacrifices have inspired Nigerians through some of the country’s most difficult moments,” the statement said.
The SDP noted that Soyinka’s influence extends far beyond Nigeria, recalling that he made history in 1986 as the first African to win the Nobel Prize in Literature for his outstanding contributions to world literature.
According to the party, the celebrated playwright, poet and activist has remained a towering figure whose writings and public interventions continue to shape conversations on democracy, justice and good governance.
The party also highlighted its relationship with the literary icon through its National Secretary, Dr. Olu Agunloye, whom it described as Soyinka’s protégé.
It said Soyinka’s exemplary life and unwavering patriotism remain a source of inspiration to the SDP in its pursuit of a better Nigeria.
The party prayed for God’s continued blessings upon the Nobel laureate, wishing him many more years of good health, strength and fulfilment.
“We pray that Nigeria, Africa and indeed humanity will continue to benefit from the fountain of his knowledge and wisdom for many years to come,” it added.
